The whale shark is a filter feeding shark, it is a slow- moving plankton eater. The largest viving fish, they can grow up to be 12m long. Its maximum age is around 70 years.
We can find the shark in tropical warm oceans, like the southern and eastern parts of South Africa; Gladden Spit in Belize; Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia; Útila in Honduras; Donsol, Pasacao and Batangas in the Philippines; as well off Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox in Yucatan Mexico; Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia; Nosy Be in Madagascar Off Tofo Reef near Inhambane in Mozambique, and the Tanzanian islands of Mafia, Pemba and Zanzibar.
The whale shark, despite its large tail fin, does not pose significant danger to humans. They can be quite gentle and play with divers.
